Case #90,724 - Check Fraud
Muskegon, Michigan, is a small metropolis located on the eastern coast of Lake Michigan. Typically known for being the largest city on the coast of this Great Lake, in 2009 Muskegon became known for something else: fraud. Twenty people were charged with cashing duplicate Social Security checks, costing the federal government $400,000. Over 200 residents in the Muskegon area have been accused of cashing duplicate checks, in some cases multiple ones, after claiming their checks were stolen or never received in the mail.*
