Case #812 - False Tax Returns
Over a three-year period from 2005 to 2008, identity thieves in Arizona filed more than 1900 false tax returns, adding up to close to $4 million. The thieves used the names and Social Security Numbers of more than 1900 different people, many of them deceased. The investigation involved the IRS, FBI and U.S. Postal Service who eventually thwarted the ring. One of the suspects in the case allegedly boasted that he was "...probably the single biggest threat to the U.S. government currently living and they don’t even know it.”*
